What is Clean Fragrance?
Clean fragrance has exploded as a term these past few years with brands proclaiming they are “all natural.” But what does clean fragrance mean? The truth is, that is up for interpretation. While the FDA monitors the safety of some products (and I use the word “monitor” loosely), there is no organizational body that can verify that something, in fact, all natural.
In it’s simplest form, perfume is a mixture of fragrance molecules that are added to a solution of high proof alcohol (90 proof or higher). However, most perfumes we experience in department stores and cosmetic stores put a whole lot more in their mixtures with many toxic ingredients that we aren’t even able to know the names of due to patented “trade-secret recipes.”
While most “clean” fragrance brands have focused on making their solutions cleaner by sticking to a pure alcohol base, most of them fail to address the actual impact of the fragrance molecules on the body. After all, it’s the fragrance we become so attached to. The topic of the actual fragrance molecules and how toxic some of them might be is just emerging. However, it is a known fact that some are endocrine disrupters and are found in tissue and breast milk weeks after wearing.
At La Roux Perfume, we avoid known endocrine disrupters by using full-bodied natural essences and natural isolates.
